GATHERING DUST

Collection of Work

Acrylic on canvas, wooden clocks

My body of work expresses moments in time; interior scenes with objects that people placed sentimental value on, but are now left to simply ‘gather dust’ due to the constant sense of urgency in society which forces us to abandon these things and pursue what capitalism deems to be more worthwhile. The clock, antiques and other ordinary items represent the substance of the subject who is absent from the scene. The vintage aesthetic further references the concept of time passing. Gathering Dust explores the lingering human imprint of stillness and reflection without the actual presence of people.

My artmaking practice has been influenced by the study and interpretation of the following artists: Dong Yuan, Carl Holsøe.

Marker's Commentary

Gathering Dust is a highly accomplished and sentimental suite of works representing a subjective response to a quiet, aging world that is often overlooked. The tertiary colour palette with luminous sepia tones are methodically combined with evocative brushstrokes to sensitively showcase domestic objects which have significant sentimental value. The tonal rendering, modulation of colour and compositional devices employed demonstrate a high level of confidence and nuanced understanding of paint. There is sophisticated use of imagery to layer meaning, creating a successful dialogue about the ordinary objects that represent memories and people who are precious and may no longer be with us. The inclusion of the early 20th century antique clocks further enhances the narrative about the passing of time and the treasured objects that can be found within the domesticity of home life.
