A PORTRAIT IN FREQUENCY

Photomedia

Photography and video

My body of work, A Portrait in Frequency, explores humanity’s existence in space and time against an ever-expanding digital world. The video installation loop builds on visual and sound techniques to represent a young girl who amplifies, disassembles, fragments and rebuilds back to her natural self. My intent is for the viewer to feel, see and hear the intense vibrations of her metamorphosis. The photographic series merges video and photographic techniques, expressing a digital evocation of the psyche and the body’s physicality, unlocking frequencies of the human condition.

My artmaking practice has been influenced by the study and interpretation of the following artists: Bill Viola, Ondrej Zunka, Fuyuko Matsui, Pipilotti Rist

Artist Interview

Marker's Commentary

This dynamic body of work is a portrait of a female subject positioned across six alternating backgrounds, representative of a persistent state of mind. The use and manipulation of slow shutter speeds, with studio lighting, results in unflinching, intriguing images that invite the viewer to investigate the shifting facial and body features. The photographs demonstrate sophisticated postproduction technique and consistent crafting of the images. The works invite thoughts of state of mind, psychological tension, and existential thought. This is reinforced by the composition and framing which leads from the upper torso to the distortions constructed within the face. The consistent higher key colour selection amplifies the dramatic fragmentation of the sophisticated imagery within this body of work.
