MECHANICAL PARADISE

Terracotta clay, oxide
The myth of the future...
Marker's Commentary
References to machinery, historical artefacts, and the concept of time within an ever-changing world are issues explored in this highly accomplished series of ceramic forms. A variety of bulbous-like terracotta storage vessels have been constructed, simultaneously reminiscent of the past and the future. Mechanical cogs adorn the exterior of the coarse forms, as if assembled from past relics. The scattered cogs suggest vessels that have been discarded or simply spare.
Surfaces are textured with stamped patterns of chains and mechanisms creating an aged patina, which is further enhanced by confidently applied oxide washes. This work utilises a range of hand built, and wheel thrown techniques to make the sculptural forms, appearing as mythic time travellers. The integrated industrial components within the construction and distinctive surface qualities of these ceramic forms embodies the machinations of time and place.
