MASHED MEMORIES/FAMILY HOLIDAYS
Printmaking
Lino prints, black ink and paper
In my handprinted body of work, Mashed Memories/Family Holidays, I examine the intricate tapestry of childhood travel through a series of lino prints. My work represents the essence of three distinct regions, with the intention that each print will serve as a window into my personal history. Based on photos my parents have taken, the abstract and varied forms communicate the diversity and unity of our travels. These contrasts result in a visual dialogue that transcends geographic boundaries and resonates with universal concepts of exploration and memory.
My artmaking practice has been influenced by the study and interpretation of the following artists: Margaret Preston, Christine Druitt-Preston
Marker's Commentary
This body of work comprises three large-scale relief linoleum prints and is an outstanding example of black and white printmaking. The application of black and white is evenly represented in the refined cutting throughout each panel, the consistency of material practice is exemplary. The student has combined strong contrast and thoughtful use of negative space. The mash-up composition style for each panel is a reinterpretation by the student of family holidays based on photographs from the family album. Each panel represents a different country. The student has expertly interpreted the flora, fauna and architecture of each country in distinctly individual ways. This artwork expertly utilises bold lines and shapes to convey detail and texture, often using simplification and stylisation to emphasise key elements. Text on signage is used to assist audience interpretation. The range of mark making demonstrates an exhaustive exploration of the range of carving methods and representation. This is a visually stunning and endlessly engaging body of work.
